FAQ

I am having trouble fitting the pedals onto my Exercise Cycle

York Fitness Exercise Cycles are supplied with the pedals detatched, they must be fitted securely prior to use. The pedals must be screwed into their respective crank arms, which is detailed in your instruction manual.

The right pedal has a standard thread. This means that it is tightened by turning the threaded shaft clockwise into the crank arm, and loosened by turning it anti-clockwise.

The left pedal has a ‘left’ thread. This means that it is tightened by turning it anti-clockwise, and loosened by turning it clockwise.

Please take care when fitting your pedals and do not force them, as this will damage your cycle.

Why isn’t there any reference to maximum load on my dumbbell bar?

York Dumbell Bars are strong enough to take whatever load you can fit on them. However, there are other factors that will limit the amount of weight you would ordinarily load them.

  • Is the set-up safe? You can only fit a certain number of weight plates on a bar before the collars are too close to the end. It is important to allow space on the bar in case the collars loosen slightly when in use
  • Can you perform the exercise correctly? If the weight discs are too large, or too heavy, you may lose in effectiveness what you gain in excess weight – and even risk personal injury
  • Consider your environment. Large, excessive weight may also cause damage to your immediate, surrounding environment if used incorrectly, or irresponsibly
What is the meaning of Stride Length on a cross trainer?

The stride length is literally the length of your stride when using the product – that is the distance from one foot to the other when at full stretch.  This is measured on a cross trainer by positioning the pedals so they are flat, and measuring from a point on the left foot plate to the same point on the right foot plate.

There is a commonly held belief that the longer the stride length, the better.  This is not strictly true.  A particularly tall user will be more comfortable with a longer stride length, and likewise a short user will suit a shorter stride length.

The elliptical shape of the pedal arc can also vary between models, being compact and almost circular on some, or generously spaced in an ‘elongated circle’ on others.  The pedal arc may differ greatly between two models with the same stride length.

How often should I lubricate my treadmill?

This can vary depending on a number of factors, the main one being how much it is used. This timetable is a rough guide:

Light use (less than 3 hours per week) – every 8 months

Medium use (3-5 hours per week) – every 4 months

Heavy use (more than 5 hours per week) – every 2 months

However, as it can be difficult to judge this, it is a good idea to check the lubrication of your treadmill at least once a month. If in doubt, apply a little oil. You can find instructions for checking and lubricating your treadmill in the Self Maintenance area.
